Many customers wonder if a pie-shaped landing at the top or bottom step creates an unsafe environment for exit and entry from a stair lift chair. A solidly square-shaped landing will always be ideal. It creates more surface area for placing feet as one enters and exits the chair. The reality is however, that many of our customers choose to work with less-than-ideal architectural features in order to stay in their homes as mobility diminishes. A pie-shaped landing is an acceptable exiting or entering point for a lift if (and only if) the user can safely navigate the smaller pie-shaped piece. We have expert contracting partners who can create more surface area where possible. It is important not to increase the size of the next step to a degree that inhibits safe track incline or safe travel, so we consider that before suggesting altering the landing in any way. In summary...a pie-shaped landing at either the top or bottom of your stair does not eliminate the possibility of a stair lift! Call us for a free evaluation and we will happily discuss your project!
