A vertical platform lift, sometimes called a VPL, wheelchair lift or porch lift, is a practical mobility solution that is compact, quiet and surprisingly affordable!
Whether you are a “future-proofing” homeowner, a property manager wanting to meet ADA requirements or an architect specifying a commercial project, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
A vertical platform lift is an open or enclosed platform that travels up and down a fixed guide system. They are designed specifically to provide access between floor levels for those experiencing diminished mobility, or using wheelchairs, or scooters.
VPL’s can have a max lifting height of up to 171,” but most VPL’s fall between a 14” and 53” span. They have a 750 lb. Weight capacity (which exceeds the max load of many residential elevators), and provide a variety of platform sizes. Platforms can be as small as 36” x 48” or up to 42” x 60.” Most residential vertical platform lifts have an electromechanical or screw drive which eliminates the need for hydraulic fluid. Additionally, some VPL’s provide a set of stairs that flatten down to a platform with the push of a button! These lifts may be installed in both interior and exterior settings and come in a wide range of trim levels to match designer aesthetics.
A vertical platform lift will provide 15-25 years of reliable service. Annual maintenance can cost $100-$200 depending on the service required. It will typically include lubrication of the drive mechanism, inspection of safety guards and limit switches and testing of the back-up battery. Outdoor stair lift maintenance will include removal of debris, and inspecting weatherproofing seals. The right lift, properly installed and maintained, will allow users to remain in the home they love despite any physical limitations!
