This project involved a scheduled grab bar assessment followed by a full installation inside a fiberglass shower/tub insert. The goal was to improve bathroom safety and reduce fall risk for the customer’s daughter, who has experienced worsening balance and now requires assistance when entering, exiting, and standing in the shower.
The customer reached out to Mobility Plus Northeast Columbia after noticing a decline in his daughter’s stability while bathing. Although she is still able to ambulate independently, she has begun losing balance during shower use and now requires additional support for safe transfers and standing support.
Because this was a returning customer, we had previously completed grab bar installations in both the master bathroom and half bathroom, and were now asked to extend that same level of safety to a secondary bathroom in the home.
During the initial assessment, our technician identified a structural concern within the shower/tub area. There was approximately a 1” to 1.5” gap between the fiberglass shower insert and the drywall backing, which prevented a standard direct stud-mounted installation.
This type of hollow wall condition required additional reinforcement to ensure the grab bars would meet safety expectations and long-term durability standards.
To ensure a safe and secure installation, our technician implemented a reinforced mounting method. Load support was added between the drywall and shower insert to strengthen the installation surface prior to mounting any hardware.
Since studs were not accessible at the required mounting locations, the technician also utilized four HealthCraft hollow wall anchors designed for secure installation in fiberglass and hollow wall applications. This combination of internal reinforcement and specialized anchoring ensured maximum stability and safety for daily use.
The grab bars were strategically placed to support safe entry, exit, and in-shower balance assistance.

The installation was completed successfully, and the customer was extremely satisfied with the results. The newly installed grab bars now provide secure, reliable support for his daughter, significantly improving bathroom safety and confidence during daily bathing routines.
